His friends took to social media to celebrate his life and legacy and also to mourn his demise.

Among those who reacted to his death is Peter Plagens who wrote the following statements on his facebook page

If there’s anything worth breaking my recently assumed No OPs /Comments Only policy on Facebook for, it’s to acknowledge Dave Hickey. And the best way to do that is to post a profile of the man that my spouse, Laurie Fendrich, wrote for The Chronicle of Higher Education. I tried to copy the whole text, but it’s impossible to read, so here’s a link. (You might encounter a semi-paywall, but you can get sign up for a few free CHE articles.)

Others who reacted to his death are Marshall Chapman who wrote

Dave Hickey died yesterday. During that long eclipse of the moon. If any human could eclipse the moon, it was Dave.
Dave and I ran hard together from 1976 until 1980. Then kept up over the years. I wrote an entire chapter about him in my book, “Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller.”
Rest easy my friend. I sure will miss you.
Also reacting to the news of Dave Hickey death was James Roe who wrote

R.I.P. Dave Hickey; 1940-2021

A complex leviathan, Dave used to call me up – I knew I was up for a challenge, that I would do a lot of listening, often not understanding his elaborate locution & phrasing. A great wave has passed. RIP old friend, exquisite nomad & ripening beast.
