It is with the heaviest hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Lt. Phil Bender earlier today. Lt. Bender was assigned to Engine 103, C-Shift.
Phil was one of the most outgoing and giving members of our department. He was often the first to offer help when someone needed it and was always quick with a smile. Our condolences and prayers are with his family, fiancé, friends and fellow firefighters. His loss leaves a great void in our department; he will be greatly missed. Today is a day of questions!!! We ask why? How can this happen? We ask these knowing there is no answer that will satisfy. We try to console and give kind words, hoping they will help. We hold back our feelings that are to hard to hide.
They can’t be hidden. We know that there is a higher power with a plan but none were ready for it. We are sad for our lose but are more concerned with the families lose and not knowing what to do for them. We can only be there when called to help.
Take a deep breath and one step at a time. We pray the prayers for the family and our brothers and sisters of Florence Fire/EMS. Brother Phil Bender you left your mark on me and on this Fire Department. God Speed and you will be missed!

Wanted to pass along some very sad news I found out today about a former teammate and friend to many of us. Phil Bender unexpectedly passed away. Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers tonight. Call or hug that friend or former teammate.. you just never know. RIP Phil. You will truly be missed.
I attended 5:30 pm mass tonight at St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington. My thoughts and prayers tonight at this mass have been for the soul of Phil Bender, a Florence Firefighter/Paramedic who died unexpectedly this morning.
I also am praying for his fellow firefighters at the Florence FD as well as his fiancé and our ER nurse, Amy Frommeyer. Everyday is a gift. And we know this more than the average person, but it still is such a shock. Rest easy, Phil. I loved the 12 hours that I ran with you and your partner this spring. Bless your kind and generous heart.
