Sam Pilafian Death : Arizona University Professor Passed Away.

Legendary Arizona University Professor of Tuba/Euphonium and founding member of the internationally renowned Empire Brass Quintet passed away at the age of 69.

The beloved professor who was also a solo Jazz artist recorded fifteen CDs. He also recorded and performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Lionel Hampton, and Pink Floyd according to a statement posted at Arizona State University Website.

Tributes are pouring in from all over the world to honor the beloved professor.

  1. I remember calling him to see if he would go on tour to Europe with Lionel Hampton. Hamp told me to tell Sam that Hamp would introduce Sam to the Pope. That sinched the deal. Much Love from Doc Skinner, Founder, Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.
